At 5 AM, while her classmates slept, Itohan was already walking 15 kilometers—carrying 25 liters of water on her head. This was her daily reality. And it cost her everything.Growing up in Abeokuta, Nigeria, a city that means "Under the Rock", Itohan's childhood was defined by water scarcity. When the taps suddenly stopped, her education suffered, her health deteriorated, and her dreams of university faded. Crossing dangerous highways with bowls of muddy water balanced on her head became routine. Diarrhea became normal. Water became survival. But Itohan refused to accept this as fate.After years of struggle and working with Springboard, a kanthari-founded NGO focused on organic farming, she discovered that rural farmers and communities across Nigeria still face the same crisis, only worse. In 2023, she founded Omitide ("Water Has Come"), a grassroots movement transforming how Nigerian communities access, conserve, and protect water.Through rainwater harvesting systems, watershed management training, and community-led water conservation programs, Itohan is tackling one of Nigeria's most urgent crises: 70 million people without clean drinking water. When the world forgot his village, he refused to give up. 🌾 Out of the same dry earth that once brought hunger and loss, Buthelezi Kagwa Sichali is growing life, and hope, again. As a child in drought‑stricken Bwiba, Northern Malawi, Buthelezi watched famine steal dreams and futures. His family walked miles for water, planted in exhausted soil, and buried loved ones lost to hunger. Years later, when job loss and another drought struck, he faced a choice: surrender, or fight for change. From that pain rose the Soil Rangers Project, a movement to heal the land and restore dignity. Farmers now protect native seeds, irrigate fields with solar power, and grow forests where desert once spread. Biochar, natural fertilizers, and indigenous knowledge are reviving soil and souls alike. Buthelezi’s goal is that local farmers can sustain their families and provide food for many others as well.
